Germany’s path to mandatory e-invoicing
Since January 1, 2025, companies in Germany must be able to receive structured electronic invoices as part of the country’s phased rollout of mandatory B2B e-invoicing.
The next key milestones are approaching quickly:
- January 1, 2027: large companies (turnover > 800 K€) must send structured e-invoices for domestic B2B transactions
- January 1, 2028: the obligation extends to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
Although this phased timeline provides a transition window, implementation typically requires early preparation across finance, IT, and partner ecosystems. And progress toward adoption has been slower than expected, largely due to limited early operational guidance on formats, transition rules, and compliance expectations. This uncertainty led many organizations to postpone implementation decisions, and and the level of B2B e-invoicing adoption in Germany has remained relatively low so far.
More guidance to increase adoption
Recent official publications now provide greater visibility on the requirements, with the aim of reversing this trend and accelerating adoption:
- Comprehensive FAQ [↗︎] about the mandate
- Introduction of Electronic Addresses for all German Businesses (GEBA)
- Plans for the upcoming XRechnung 4.0 standard
But with less than nine months remaining before the next major phase begins, companies that have not yet started preparing face increasing time pressure. In this context, the eRechnungs-Gipfel comes at a particularly timely moment.
The event will offer companies and service providers an opportunity to better understand the latest regulatory developments, clarify implementation approaches, and exchange practical perspectives as preparation efforts accelerate ahead of the upcoming mandate milestones.
