From 2026, e-invoicing is mandatory in Germany. Get ready with XRechnung, ZUGFeRD, and full support from Dynatos and Routty.

New mandate means change – here’s how to stay ahead

From 2026, e-invoicing will become mandatory for B2B transactions in Germany. With XRechnung and ZUGFeRD leading the way, companies need to prepare now. Here’s what you need to know and how Routty can help.

The formats you need to know

XRechnung: Germany’s official XML format, required for B2G invoicing. It ensures standardization and smooth integration into public-sector systems.

ZUGfERD: A hybrid model that combines machine-readable XML with a human-readable PDF/A-3. Ideal for B2B, it balances automation and readability.

Both align with European standard EN 16931, offering legal certainty for the public and private sectors.

What’s changing in 2026?

Starting January 1, 2026, structured e-invoices will become mandatory for domestic B2B transactions. Businesses can no longer rely on PDFs or paper formats (with limited exceptions like B2C or low-value invoices under €250).
