Belgian Secretary of State for Digitalization, Mathieu Michel, signed a Benelux recommendation on March 14, 2024, encouraging the adoption of electronic invoicing. This announcement closely aligns with Belgium’s recent mandate of B2G e-invoicing for its public procurement, effective as of March 1, 2024.
Secretary Michel emphasizes the importance of digital convergence and cooperation between the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg. The adoption of e-invoicing facilitates faster and secure cross-border invoicing, leading to enhanced trade between Benelux countries.
Peppol as the preferred solution for increased standardization
The recommendation urges collaboration in transborder coordination and sharing best practices, including utilizing the Peppol network to address potential obstacles. By embracing e-invoicing, the Benelux countries aim to lead in digitalization, fostering gains in productivity, growth, and reducing administrative burdens.
Furthermore, the countries plan to share their experiences with neighboring nations, promoting convergence and collaboration. Frans Weekers, Secretary-General of the Benelux, notes that widespread adoption of e-invoicing enhances administrative efficiency, contributes to reducing VAT gaps, and eliminates cross-border barriers, particularly benefiting Benelux SMEs.
